Babcock & Wilcox Canada Ltd. (B&W Canada), an indirect subsidiary of The Babcock & Wilcox Company, has been awarded a contract to supply four modularized boilers for Phase 1 of the Kearl oil sands project. The project is being developed by Imperial Oil Limited in the Athabasca oil sands region, East of Kearl Lake, 70 kilometers North of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Kearl Phase 1 consists of a surface mine and plant facilities that will produce clean bitumen for blending, transport and sale.

The boilers provided by B&W Canada will produce utility steam that will be used to supply various processes in the plant.

With our extensive experience and expertise in the utility and industrial market, we are confident that we will have a successful contract with Imperial Oil, said Mike Lees, president of B&W Canada.

This contract demonstrates our reputation of performance and reliability which will be crucial in the challenging environment of the Alberta oil sands. One of the many advantages of our boiler is that its modularity lowers construction risk and offers far greater cost certainty than traditional boiler options, Lees added.

Selected components, such as headers and wall panels will be fabricated in B&W Canada’s Cambridge facility, while component fabrication and modularization will be completed in B&W Canada’s Melville, Saskatchewan facility.

Our newly retooled Melville facility is equipped specifically for the modularization of components for these modular boilers, said Lees.

Completed pressure part modules will be shipped directly to the job site from the Melville facility.
